Feed for Health at 2nd SAFEED-PAP workshop
Meeting European and Asian institutes and stakeholders

The COST Action Feed for Health has been presented by Luciano Pinotti, coordiantor of COST Action in the 2nd SAFEED-PAP workshop “PAP Detection: Europe-Asia Exchange of experiences, held in Qingdao, China on April 21-23th. This workshop, organised within the context of the SAFEED-PAP project, aimed to gather European and Asian institutes and stakeholders working to the use, development and validation of analytical methods for the feed sectors. In this context, the presentation of the Feed for Health network gave an overview not only of the Cost System, but also of the key topics related to feed and animal nutrition that need to be addressed.

The dimension of feed production system has been also considered. In fact, despite the economic slump, persisting animal diseases and uneasy commodity market, the worldwide total quantity of animal feed made industrially achieved 700 million metric tons last year. According to this the world per capita feed used can be estimated in more than 100 Kg/Person/Year. Clearly, ensuring such high outputs of these traded products conform to adequate quality standards is a major undertaking and it is fair to say that worldwide has made significant progress in defining standards and promoting legislation in this area. The result is that feedstuffs are now required to be equivalent to foods in terms of nutritional quality, technical aspects, safety and so forth. But which is the next frontier in animal nutrition? Can we go ahead form feed safety? These issues, which represent the Feed for Health cost action basis,  have been discussed in the presentation.
